Andaman Islands: Kishor*

We have the privilege of equipping faithful men and women to serve their communities. This month we would like to introduce you to Kishor*, a 43-year-old missionary, husband, and father of two. Kishor serves in the Andaman Islands.

Located in the Bay of Bengal, south of Myanmar, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a union territory of India. With a population of just over 400,000 people, these islands are geographically and culturally distinct from the Indian mainland. Among their inhabitants are some of the world’s most isolated communities, including the Sentinelese tribe of North Sentinel Island. Kishor is one of 20 leaders we support on the islands.

Over the past five years, nearly 90 house churches have been planted. Local leaders are helping children escape poverty through education programs and distributing Bibles and Gospel tracts in six different languages. Support from Harvest Bridge provides ministry toolkits with supplies like raincoats, flashlights, and study Bibles. Recently, small business grants for ministry leaders have helped them towards financial sustainability.

Coming to Faith

“I was born and brought up in a Hindu family. My parents came to Chennai seeking a job during the 1960s and settled there. In 1995, an electrician worked in constructing our house. Since he was a believer, he shared the gospel with us. In my family, everyone except me became the children of God and took baptism. I started questioning God about His proof of being the real God. Seeing the anointing of the Holy Spirit on my father, I realized that He is real.

God spoke to me saying, ‘This is my power, do you believe and accept me?’ Then I gave my life to God and took baptism in the year 2000, when I was 18. I started getting involved in the church ministries, especially in prayers whenever I had time. On one such occasion, God called me for His ministry like Moses and told me that, ‘I will use you like Moses; come to me and work for me.’ Then I committed my life for His service and came to the ministry [in Andaman].”

Daily Ministry

“We conduct Sunday services in the morning in two places in the Tamil language and in Hindi. Three days a week, we go for personal evangelism and tract distribution. Bible studies are taking place in the houses, and also in the church on Wednesdays. Chain prayer is conducted monthly once in the church for 12 hours. Every Friday evening, we go to the medical ministry, praying for the sick people.

On Saturdays we are conducting a prayer meeting for the Sunday service. During Christmas, we invited 25 new poor families to the church and gave ration items and clothes to them. They sat in the Christmas service and heard the Good News of Jesus Christ. They all were happy, and asked us to come to their houses for prayer. We are following up with them once weekly and teaching Biblical truth.”

Changed Lives

“Recently, I came into contact with a Hindu woman of the Tamil group, from a very strong group of followers of Hindu goddesses and gods. In our regular medical ministry, she noticed us and started thinking about why these people are coming and praying for the unknown people who are in medical need. God’s love touched her heart and she started searching for the truth by asking us to explain.

Weekly we used to go to her house and explain the sacrifice of Jesus for the whole of humanity. As she started reading the Bible, God started speaking to her through the Word. As she started coming to Church, her family members, husband and relatives objected and threatened. But, she never gave up and was praying for the touch of God in their lives. God did a miracle—all those who stood against her became calm. It was an amazing work of God in our ministry.”

Financial Sustainability

In addition to his daily ministry, Kishor has found a meaningful way to combine his love for music with his calling. With the help of our economic development grant, he offers music classes to local students, using the tuition to support his family and ministry, while also building relationships and sharing the love of Christ through his teaching:

“We have started the music class for guitar and keyboard. For the first three months, only three students came. From the fourth month onwards, there were 13 students. A total of Rs.7500 ($85) we are earning monthly. After starting the project, the ministry is going well without any financial problem.”

Prayer Requests

  1. “We are planning to start three more house churches in different places, to reach the people in those areas for Christ.
  2. Our children’s educational needs.
  3. My wife’s postgraduate study.
  4. A microphone for the church.”
